• Our school is named in honor of a great lady, Ethel C. Bobcean, who served as a member of the Flat Rock Board of Education from 1950-1990. Mrs. Bobcean was a life long supporter of public education.
• Bobcean School houses all kindergarten through third grade students of the Flat Rock Community School District.The staff is composed of 24 teachers and 18 support staff. Students and staff are supported by a Resource Room teacher, a Counselor, and a Speech and Language Pathologist. Services of a district psychologist and social worker are also available. Latch Key is availible through the district Community Education program and is available for students before and after school.

John M. Barnes Elementary School

• We are a small 4th and 5th grade school located in the Southeastern corner of Michigan. Our nearest large city is Detroit, MI, located about 20 miles north of us. Flat Rock is home to the North American headquarters of Mazda Corporation. We have many GREAT things to offer our students.
• Our students participate in many international, national, state, and local activities. These include Science Fairs, Spelling Bees, Geography Bees, Science Olympics, Honor Choir, and band. Our students have consistently placed in the top five nationally in the National Science Olympiad. We are members of the Transformations Project, a national science, and technology program. We are excited about the future and are always looking forward to passing innovative ideas on to our students.

• The school was built in 1965 and houses approximately 400 students grades 6th, 7th and 8th. The school is a one level structure with 19 classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, and swimming pool. The school grounds also include a football practice field, an all weather track, baseball field, softball field, and tennis courts.
